NHTSA Safety Ratings

Complete 5-Star Safety Ratings scorecards — frontal, side, pole and rollover — for every tracked model-year.

NHTSA's 5-Star Safety Ratings program crash-tests vehicles and publishes scores for frontal, side and rollover performance. In the tracked range, 97 of 148 model-years hold the top overall score of five stars, 43 hold four stars and 0 hold three. The overall score is not an average: NHTSA weights the individual tests, and a weak sub-score can cap the overall result, which is why our model-year pages reproduce the complete scorecard rather than just the headline star.

Rollover resistance is where many taller vehicles lose their fifth star: the rating reflects a measured risk of rollover in a single-vehicle crash, and SUVs and pickups commonly score four stars there even when their frontal and side scores are perfect. Side-pole testing — a narrow-impact crash into a pole or tree — is the other frequent differentiator, and it is included in every scorecard on this site.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does NHTSA's overall star rating mean?

It combines frontal, side and rollover crash-test results into a single 1–5 star score for each tested variant. Five stars is the highest. Our pages show every sub-score, not just the overall.

Why do variants of the same car have different ratings?

NHTSA tests specific body styles and drivetrains. A 4-door sedan and its 2-door coupe version, or front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive variants, can carry different scores.

How many tracked vehicles are five-star?

97 of the 148 model-years tracked at launch hold a five-star overall rating in the NHTSA data accessed in October 2026.
